It was a strong start to lớn the series of three October qualifiers for the USMNT and manager Gregg Berhalter has his 18-year-old goal scorer to thank. After a frustrating first half for the USA in which Jamaica sat back & proved difficult to break down, Pepi found the breakthrough with an expert header four minutes after the break. The Americans didn"t create many opportunities in the first half but they did have gripes with the officials on three different plays, including one after just 18 seconds. U.S. Winger Paul Arriola sprinted behind the Jamaican defense and was hauled down from behind by Kemar Lawrence with nothing but green space in front of him. The referee, Reon Radix from Grenada, opted for a yellow thẻ instead of a red for denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunty, likely taking into account the distance from goal.
The U.S. Bench was also unhappy with the yellow card decision on a similar play in the 33rd minute when Brenden Aaronson was charging toward goal, only to lớn be hacked down by Damion Lowe, who was cautioned.
